In 1955 Emery met his wife Patricia Bauer, and over the almost 67 years of wedded bliss, they raised three children and several dogs and had at least 12 cars, mostly bought at repo auctions. Occasionally he was used as cheap labor by his children and wife on various home repair projects, rental home renovations and car repairs. He retired at age 55 and spent his days pursuing his passion of gardening, raising children, growing tomatoes, making wine, and relaxing. He mastered the language of Cobol and helped run the entire Firestone Payroll system at the Computer Center. Emery left for 8 weeks of intensive study, returned as a programmer in the Computer Center in Akron, and progressed to systems analyst. He beat the odds and Firestone offered him a position in the growing field of computer programming. Unfortunately, Emery contracted Tuberculosis. Long hours and hard work resulted in him moving up and eventually getting his own store to manage. His love of music and his musical and dance talents have been carried on in his kids and his grandchildren.Įmery started working for Firestone Tire and Rubber as a service tech in a Tire Service center. During his years in the service, he played Clarinet in a band, and became quite skilled at the Jitterbug, claiming to be the best Jitterbugger in Akron in the mid-50s. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1955. Emery served overseas and was a veteran of foreign wars. It was rumored that Emery spent hours teaching his parents English at the Dinner Table.Įmery attended Garfield High School and then Kent State University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, rumored to have studied 4 languages, and enlisted in the Air Force at age 20, or 21 depending on which document you take as gospel for his birthdate. Sylvester had found his way to Akron to secure employment at Firestone Tire and Rubber. His three siblings and mother traveled from Rivisondoli Italy, by boat, to join Sylvester who had come to America to pursue the American dream. Emery Anthony (Americo Antonius) Martin (Martini), 92 years of age, having lived in Kenmore, Steubenville, Canton, Akron and 50 years in Manchester Ohio, most recently of Northfield Center, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 20th, 2023.īorn in Akron Ohio, to Italian Immigrants Eugenia and Sylvester Martini, Emery (Em) was the only child born in America.
